Studie bestätigt: Nikotin schützt unseren Verstand

Die Forscher Marina R. Picciotto und Michele Zoli haben am 05. Juni 2002 eine Studie mit dem Namen:  Nicotinic Receptors in Aging and Dementia herausgebracht. In diese Studie belegen sie, das Nikotin eine schützende Funktion für die menschlichen Nervenzellen hat. Auch hier wieder bestätigt sich, das Nikotin eben kein tödliches Suchtgift ist.

CONCLUSIONS

The original hypothesis that nicotine, through stimulation of nAChRs, can improve cognitive function issupported by studies of patients with AD and animalmodels of cognitive impairment. In addition, epidemiologic studies suggesting that nAChR activationcan protect against the development of AD and PD have been supported by numerous studies showing that nicotine treatment can protect against neuronaldeath both in vitroand in vivo. An examination of theensemble of experiments using nicotine to protectagainst neurotoxicity in vivo suggests some general principles (see Tables 1 and 2). … However, the neuroprotective effect of nicotine is calcium dependent in these areas (Dajas-Bailador et al., 2000), suggesting that calcium entry is important for down-stream signaling events mediated by nicotine. … Although the cellular mechanisms of nicotine-me-diated neuroprotection have begun to be investigated, more work is necessary to determine the pathwayscritical for these protective effects of nicotine. In addition, the time-course and route of administrationof nicotine, as well as the nAChR subtypes expressed,may be critical in determining whether nicotine-me-diated neuroprotection or a neurotoxicity will occur ina particular cellular population. Thus, more researchis needed to develop subtype-specific nicotinic ago-nists and more studies are necessary to determine the optimal dosing regimen that might allow therapeuticuse of nicotine and nicotinic agonists in patients withneurodegenerative disorders.

Meiner Meinung nach belegt diese Studie sehr deutlich wie fehlgeleitet der Kampf gegen das Dampfen und den rauchfreien Nikotinkonsum ist. Es ist ein Kampf der mit Ideologien und nicht mit Fakten geführt wird.
